When she moved back to San Francisco in 2010, my mom started walking prolifically, taking pictures left and right, and feeling inspired. The photo at left above is one of my favorites of her in the City. It’s August 30, 2013, she’s on Van Ness Avenue, stopped at an unsightly spot (defunct gas station enclosed by rusted chain link fence) to capture the disruptive beauty of a sunflower. I believe this picture was taken by a guy who lived in a building several blocks down from her who may have cultivated an urban garden right there. She befriended him and his dog, as she was wont to do in the course of her on-foot travels — her buoyant spirit and iconic smile ever magnetic. (These galleries are not yet populated. More to come from her digital archive.)
